Episode 7: Only Human by Maria Bradley (PG)

Welcome to episode 7 of the Indies’ Reading Block Podcast!

Maria Bradley has worked at a variety of professions but has never released any of her writing for publication until November 2012. She writes primarily for teens and frequently states that her three young adult children are her inspiration. Although she is not primarily a poet, she has recently been placed as one of the runner-ups in a poetry competition with her poem “Manchester”–a cheerful rendition about her home town in England and its appallingly wet weather.

In ONLY HUMAN, teenager Aecia is so isolated and desperate that she talks to her diary as though it was a real human friend. She wears neutraliser to conceal her human smell, whitener to deaden her pink and healthy human skin, and drinks the warm, thick life’s blood of another of her own species, just to go unnoticed and escape death at the hands of members of her own clam family! Aecia has not experienced the joy and freedom of a breezy summer day, has never had a picnic on the park and watched the sun filter through the leaves of the trees onto her face. No. Aecia must live her life through the deep darkness of night. She must pretend to fear the glorious rays of the sun and cower at the sound of the birds celebrating the dawn.

Her traumatic and time-consuming theatrical performance every night of her life is simply because she is human and must live in a sadistic vampire world. She is a throwback, a deformity, and a curious case of two members of the same species producing a different one! She is a cuckoo amongst her people.

Walk with Aecia as she meets her first love. Feel her confusion as she dares to wonder if he is human, too. Experience her terror when she finally uncovers the truth about her own origin and finds that it is enough to shake the foundations of the cruel vampire regime forever!

You can purchase ONLY HUMAN in ebook and paperback form on Amazon.

Welcome to episode 6 of the Indies’ Reading Block Podcast!

There’s been a slight change to this episode. Last episode we mentioned we were going to feature a short story from Holly Barbo, but due to unforeseen circumstances, I was forced to reschedule. Holly’s story will now be featured on the February 15 show. This episode we’ll be featuring MR. MONKEYBADGER AND THE CANDYFLOSS ORANGUTAN by Dan Wright, a children’s short story. This episode is rated G.

Dan lives in Canterbury. He picked up a love of fantasy stories after reading THE LORD OF THE RINGS, THE NARNIA BOOKS and numerous Roald Dahl novels. He is best known for his Draconica series, a fantasy/manga series that has been praised for its anime-styled action, humour and illustrations.

Dan also runs his own website, blog and a wiki page dedicated to the world of Draconica and is a part time reviewer of books. His other hobby is playing guitar in a band called Rage of Silence. He likes all kinds of music—but he mainly listens to rock and metal, rap, some pop music and also film and video game scores. He also loves Disney and Pixar movies—often finding himself singing along to the tunes, or crying manly tears! He is also a slave to his cat, who takes up a lot of his time when he isn’t at work or writing!

MR. MONKEYBADGER AND THE CANDYFLOSS ORANGUTAN is a short children’s story Dan Wright has provided us to showcase the various stories he’s capable of writing. It’s a humorous story full of strange and colorful creatures and is sure to delight the young and old.

If you’re interested in learning more about Dan Wright, head on over to his website. Or follow him on Twitter. Or like his Facebook page.

Our next episode will air on February 1 and will feature an excerpt from a YA novel by Maria Bradley.

Free January 2015 Wallpaper

January 2015 Wallpaper Preview

It’s a new year and most importantly: a new month. To celebrate, our wallpaper this month feature’s a rather large image of dark chocolate. Why? To coincide with the quote from “The Five-Second Rule” by Michelle Franklin, of course! Her character, Rautu, unfortunately dropped a piece of dark chocolate (the horror!) and contemplates whether to let it be or pick it up.

Though we can’t give you your own piece of dark chocolate to enjoy, we do hope that you at least decorate your devices and computers with this and think of dark chocolate all the time.

Direct Sales Change

As some of you may or may not know, there’s been a change with how the European Union handles tax on digital products. They have what’s known as VAT, or value added tax. Before the start of the new year, VAT was usually determined based on the seller’s country. However, at the start of the year, VAT is now being handled by the customer’s country.

What does that mean? That means that in order for us to comply by the laws set by the EU, we would be required to register and pay for any and all purchases that came from a customer who lives in one of the EU VAT-compliant countries. For example, let’s say a customer from the United Kingdom wanted to purchase an ebook directly from us because they know that buying directly would put more money in the author’s pocket. That would mean we’d be forced to charge 20% extra to cover the cost of tax.

As a micro/small press, it’s just not financially smart for us to keep tabs on all the extra tax expenses, let alone file in every single EU country just to pay a small tax fee. So we’ve disabled sales from the following countries:

  • Austria
  • Belgium
  • Bulgaria
  • Cyprus
  • Czech Republic
  • Croatia
  • Denmark
  • Estonia
  • Finland
  • France
  • Germany
  • Greece
  • Hungary
  • Isle of Man
  • Italy
  • Latvia
  • Lithuania
  • Luxembourg
  • Malta
  • Netherlands
  • Poland
  • Portugal
  • Romania
  • Slovakia
  • Slovenia
  • Spain
  • Sweden
  • United Kingdom

We realize that disabling direct sales from those countries also means we’re also preventing them from ordering paperbacks directly from us. In some countries, that means we’re taking away their only way to get a paperback copy of our books. We plan on figuring out a work around for this, but it might take some time.

Thank you for your continued support in our books!

Episode 5: The Adventures of JoJo Smith by Tony Duxbury (R)

We’re here at episode 5 of the Indies’ Reading Block Podcast!

Today we’re featuring an excerpt from the novel THE ADVENTURES OF JOJO SMITH by Tony Duxbury. The novel is rated R.

Tony was born in London, but now lives in Guatemala, Central America. In his lifespan, he’s visited 28 countries and has worked various jobs ranging from dishwasher to English teacher. Tony started writing over 20 years ago, but is only now trying to break into publishing. Reading has always been a passion of Tony’s since he was a teen and he discovered fantasy in his 20s, which has become his preferred genre to write in. He believes that fantasy exerices his imagination to write a credible story especially when implementing magic or other supernatural powers in a tale. His writing is about the possibility of change.

THE ADVENTURES OF JOJO SMITH is a tongue-in-cheek fantasy tale about a young man named JoJo Smith, who, through no fault of his own, is transported to an alien, medieval world by a magician who was practicing a spell Scared witless, all he wants is to be sent home, unfortunately the magician ignores him. And then JoJo Smith hits upon the idea of making a revolution to gain his ends when he finally decides to take things into his own hands. Of course things go wrong from the start.

You can purchase THE ADVENTURES OF JOJO SMITH on Amazon by clicking here.

Our next episode will air on January 15 and will feature a short story from Holly Barbo.
